 BARBARY GROUND SQUIRRELS

With the exception of bats, all mammals on Fuerteventura were introduced either intentionally or accidentally.

The Barbary Ground Squirrels have developed into a tourist attraction on the island, since they are already so tame in many places that they eat from the hand of the humans.  Unfortunately, they have multiplied so much through the abundant feeding that they have become a real plague.  In the seventies, two couples of these squirrels were brought and released by foreign legionnaires returning from Morocco. Today they number into the millions. They undermine and perforate natural stone walls and attack the already strained flora. Nothing is safe from them.

Therefore we urge - please do not feed the squirrels.

Other mammals on the island include countless cats, hedgehogs, rabbits, mice and the Canary Island shrew.
