 ANTIGUA - TACHA BLANCA

Difficulty:  Easy.

Length:  4.2km

Summary:

The trail goes in a southern direction along
the mountain massif, past the cemetery then through grain cultivation areas towards Tacho Blanca. Once you reach the spring, you will find a shady
spot covered with giant reeds and shaded by large trees.

Details:

The starting point is down Calle el Molino towards west.

(If we want to see a typical majorero windmill we can continue for 400 meters west, before returning to our route).

We turn south on Calle El Durazno, passing between a cementery and a pond that collects water when it rains.

After reaching the street Artesano Pepe Melián and following it for a few meters west, we find on the left the dirt track that we will always follow in the southwest direction.

As you walk along the path we can observe, plots sorrounded by walls of stones and gavias (typical cultivating systems used previously for cultivating cereals). Along with a panoramic view of the village of Antigua. To the west some of the highest hills of the island, like the Janana hill of 688 m. Along the way you can see animals grazing (goats, cows).

Towards the end of the walk, you will come across “tunos” prickly pear plantations, which were once used to the collect of cochineal, parasites used for the production of dyes.  This crop, once a source of prosperity for the islands, ceased to be profitable when chemical dyes replaced natural dyes in the textile industry; The tunos are still appreciated for their fruits, from which you can taste homemade jams and liqueurs.

We climb up to have excellent views of both the town of Antigua to the north and Malpaís which extends southeast.

We border the Majada de Tacha Blanca until arriving at a greener zone where we will find the "cave" of Tacha Blanca, of which many old stories are told. Served as a refuge for hunters and people who sought shelter from the rain.

Here we see how a stream of water grows between slabs of stones along which abundant reeds grow, and the fountain gradually fills the pond.  This area is currently used as a picnic area, equipped with some chairs and tables.

Among the birdlife that we can observe we highlight the raven (Corvus Corax Tingitanus) and the kestrel (Falcus Tinnunculus). Between the plants we emphasize the Camosilla (Lobularia Lybica) and the verode (Kleinia Neriifolia).
