BARRANCO DE LA TORRE - SALINAS - LA GUIRRA
Details:
Set off from the village of Los Alares, we leave its square and (after crossing a fairly degraded area) 120 metres to the north, you have the gorge of the La Torre ravine. This is an area with a lot of vegetation where archaeological remains from pre-Hispanic times have been found.
Follow the gorge of the ravine in the E-SE direction through fields and farms (many of which have now been abandoned), gavia plots and small palm groves. Cross under the FV2 highway and continue through the area with thick vegetation to reach an aggregates quarry which you will circle from the south.
On your way through palm groves and Tamarix Canariensis thickets, you will be able to spot the sea. You will reach the mouth of the La Torre ravine, where you have a lime kiln and an extensive pebble beach.
Now we head NE towards Salinas de Carmen salt pans, an important centre for salt production in the past that now features the Salt Museum and a visitor information centre, where you can learn about the history and functioning of this site. A unique feature of these salt pans is that they are fed directly by the tides and are practically unaffected by storms thanks to their location deep in the Playa del Muellito creek.
Continue along the seafront on a comfortable path that follows the coast. In this area known as Las Marismas, you have an important paleontological site, where the fossilised remains of many marine organisms from the Pleistocene period onward have been found. You can also easily spot many bird species that frequent the coast for food and have no problem making themselves comfortable in the golf course on your left.
In the very middle of the tourist area, you have the Guirra Lime Kilns (in front of the shopping centre), which have been fully restored. The activity derived from the production and sale of lime, which was especially important for this municipality - not only is it home to an extensive area rich in limestone but also thanks to its suitable coast. Ships could dock here and transport the material to the other islands. You are now in Caleta de Fuste.
